Ireland elects a left-wing president in an anti-government landslide.

Independent Catherine Connolly won a record 63.4% of valid votes.

Heather Humphreys of the government coalition party Fine Gael finished a distant second with 29.5%. Finishing in third and last place Saturday was Jim Gavin of the largest government party, Fianna Fáil, who won barely 7% of votes.
