Cheap packages entering the EU will be charged a tax of €3 per item from next July to stem a flood of packages from Chinese webshops, the bloc’s 27 finance ministers agreed.

The flood of untaxed and often unsafe goods prompted the European Commission to propose a temporary solution.

The deal effectively ends the tax-free status for packages worth less than €150.
