In the five decades since ‍Portugal threw off its fascist dictatorship, a presidential election has only once before - in 1986 - required a run-off.

Opinion polls in Portugal show that far-right candidate Andre Ventura could win 24 percent, closely followed by Socialist Antonio Jose Seguro.
