For most of the past 16 years, Viktor Orbán’s position as Hungary’s prime minister looked unshakeable. But recently corruption scandals and dismal economic growth have damaged his popularity.

In April 2024 Peter Magyar, a former ally of Mr Orbán, took over the tiny centre-right Tisza party and reinvented it as an anti-corruption outfit.
