Airlines in Europe remain liable for about €3.2bn in unpaid compensation for delays, according to FT calculations that show the dysfunction of the world’s most generous repayment regime.

Opaque rules, industry foot-dragging and poor information mean less than half of the compensation payments due for delayed flights have been claimed over the past 15 years.
